I’m singing with Rima Fand and other singers on a barge that moves by underneath the audience watching from a bridge. We’re signing a haunting Bulgarian song about a badly wounded rebel.

I’ll also be performing in this on October 22nd, 31st and November 1st.

Black Sea Hotel is currently immersed in the production of their debut music video, “Zhenish Me Mamo”, a potently haunting contemporarily-arranged folksong about dragons and fear. The video is directed by creative whirlwind, Josephine Decker, who’s proven it possible not only to locate and acquire miniature modern-day dragons in NYC, but also to successfully choreograph them moving with grace across the faces and throughout the long hair of Black Sea Hotel member’s Shelley, Sarah and Willa… near ocean waves, at dawn. Decker has crafted an other-worldly experience fear, sensuality, and strange-ity all in one. Video is scheduled for release early 2015.

To accompany the release of this music video is Black Sea Hotel’s new studio recording of “Zhenish Me Mamo”, engineered by James Frazee, mixed by Sarah Small, and mastered by Sarah Register, of The Lodge Mastering. This release is a recording debut for BSH’s newest member, the vocally entrancing Shelley Thomas“Zhenish Me Mamo” will be released Winter 2015, as a single EP with live bonus tracks from recent shows throughout late 2014.

Black Sea Hotel was up in Hudson, NY, where we performed at the Basilica Hudson, headlining (with opening musicians, Patrick Higgins + Charlie Looker) for Basilica's closing party for BUMP: An Interactive Whale Exhibit by Frank & Dan Dendanto . Stunning acoustics and visuals. We sang under suspended whale bones. Enjoy a sample of the evening.

Black Sea Hotel has returned from a gorgeous New Mexico retreat. Sarah and Shelley traveled back to New York this past week from Willa’s hometown, where they’d joined her for a week of intensely focused Black Sea Hotel musical rehearsals, farming, green smoothie-drinking, production meetings, photo-shoots, and video-shoots. The trip culminated in a radio interview / live performance on KUNM's Free Form with Harry Norton, an acoustically gorgeous concert at GiG Performance Space in Santa Fe, and a BSH vocal workshop. We treated ourselves to a heavenly evening under the stars in hot and cold baths at the one-and-only 10,000 Waves.

We collected some stunning new media (thanks to all of our resident photographers + videographers: Jim Roberts, Ryan Roberts, and Bruce Dunlap.) We workshopped all our songs with tremendous love, focus, and precision, and feel very enlivened by this experience. We are grateful to Willa’s father, Jim, for hosting us for the week on his beautiful rustic farm in Chimayo, NM.

Black Sea Hotel, in new and unusual formjourneyed through the mid-Atlantic last month… We taught and laughed a lot, but mainly (as per usual), we sang our hearts out. As many of you know, Willa and I had our third member leave the group last year, so we decided to go on this tour in new and unusual form. Guess what!? This new form included a BOY in the mix (but don't worry, he sings in a girl's register most of the time, unless he's singing low with me in my boy register). Our guest singers on this tour, pictured here with Willa and I, are Shelley Thomas and Carl Linich.
