Secondary Dominance, Small’s decade-long musical project-in-the-works, will premiere this January 2017 as a multi-disciplinary performance at HERE Art Center’s annual PROTOTYPE Festival. In 13 micro-movements, Small synthesizes genres from Balkan folk to contemporary chamber, industrial, renaissance, rock, rap, and punk, while interweaving live and recorded electronics, Chinese sheng, strings, winds, and densely packed vocals. Working in her signature Tableau Vivant form, the music is complemented by gestural choreography and projections, including the world premiere of Black Sea Hotel's first music video. Secondary Dominance is a unique multimedia experience that unfolds as lush living pictures rife with honesty and mistakes, ferocity and hilarity.

Butter on the Latch

I know several of you have been asking. At last, the beautiful and terrifying "Butter on the Latch" is Now Available on AmazonFandor, and iTunes… I forgot to share this a few months back when we learned that the film got distribution. For those of you new here, this is a feature film, in which I play the (creepy) lead role, directed by the deliriously-talented Josephine Decker.

Making Muscles, as requested by the Interviewer, Jeff, is that right, Jeff? :-) in my Williamsburg Living Room Post-Interview, 9/26/14  | photo: Jeff Wengrofsky

Jeff Wengrofsky came over to my apartment this past September and interviewed me for his radio show, Gift Horse: Inside New York Art, which just aired on Ukrainian National Radio. The broadcast was on Wednesday 3/11 and Sunday 3/15 at 8:00pm EST from Ukraine via I-RADIO. I haven't actually yet listened to it myself. Gonna do that this week! If you'd like to listen (maybe even before I have a chance to), here's the archived interview (looks like you actually have to scroll to the bottom of the page and type in my name in the search field).

Black Sea Hotel is currently immersed in the production of their debut music video, “Zhenish Me Mamo”, a potently haunting contemporarily-arranged folksong about dragons and fear. The video is directed by creative whirlwind, Josephine Decker, who’s proven it possible not only to locate and acquire miniature modern-day dragons in NYC, but also to successfully choreograph them moving with grace across the faces and throughout the long hair of Black Sea Hotel member’s Shelley, Sarah and Willa… near ocean waves, at dawn. Decker has crafted an other-worldly experience fear, sensuality, and strange-ity all in one. Video is scheduled for release early 2015.

To accompany the release of this music video is Black Sea Hotel’s new studio recording of “Zhenish Me Mamo”, engineered by James Frazee, mixed by Sarah Small, and mastered by Sarah Register, of The Lodge Mastering. This release is a recording debut for BSH’s newest member, the vocally entrancing Shelley Thomas“Zhenish Me Mamo” will be released Winter 2015, as a single EP with live bonus tracks from recent shows throughout late 2014.

Oh my goodness… The Berlinale experience was out of this world! "Butter on the Latch" was received with endless enthusiasm. All the screenings (theaters of 500 people!) were sold out each night. Josephine Decker, the director of both "Butter on the Latch" and her second feature - which was also chosen to screen at the festival ("Thou Wast Mild and Lovely”) - was a wandering star at the Festival. We are so proud of her. The critical acclaim and press received for "Butter" is making me so proud to be part of this film. Here’s some adorable giggly red-carpet pics the whole thing was magical. Here's a trailer. Here’s some of the Press so far: Variety Magazine, Hammer to Nail, Indiewire, The Skinny, Still in Berlin, No Budge, Fandor, MSN Germany, Radio EINS, Interview MagazineHuffington PostFilmmaker Magazine, Chicago TribuneThe New YorkerBullett,The Playlist, Fimstarts.

“Butter on the Latch”, the psychological horror fantasy/fiction film in which I play lead, will be premiering at the 2014 Berlinale (Berlin Film Fest) starting next week. What began as an acting experiment for me has taken off in wondrous ways– Here’s my favorite review to date by The New Yorker, who described the film as “an utter exhilaration of cinematic imagination, a pure high of invention”. Enormous congratulations to director Josephine Decker for achieving the unspeakable – Not only has the Berlinale invited “Butter on the Latch” to screen, but they’ve also invited in Josephine’s second-film-of the year, “Thou Wast Mild and Lovely”.
